Rain, wind and cool temperatures hit Newcastle early

Rain, wind and cool temperatures hit Newcastle early

WINTER came early to Newcastle last week when a cold snap rolled into town.
Brisk evenings were the norm across the region, with parts of the Upper Hunter dropping to temperatures below zero.
Threatening clouds hovered overhead for most of the week across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, and 42 millimetres of rain was recorded at Nobbys Head on Thursday.
Showers were more frequent in the eastern parts of NSW and heavier along the coast.
Southerly winds of 25-30km/h were recorded mid week and had increased to 40km/h by the middle of the day on Friday.
Pleasant skies are expected to return this week, but a cold front and rain will spread across southern and eastern Australia from Wednesday, June 5, to Sunday, June 9.
Looking ahead, there is a high likelihood of above average rainfall this winter.
More east-coast lows are expected throughout June and July, with daytime temperatures colder than average and nighttime temperatures warmer.
